Online vs paper-based test

Practice Test Booklets 1 & 2 are PDF booklets that may be downloaded to your computer and printed. The format reflects a paper-based test experience (WA test sittings only). The test questions contained in these booklets are relevant for both paper-based and online test experiences.

Practice Test 3 reflects the Multiple Choice, online test experience (ACER sittings). If you are sitting STAT online you will not need to fill in an answer sheet or demographic details, you will select your answers on the screen by clicking a button. The test questions are relevant for both paper-based and online test experiences.

Practice Test 4 reflects the Written English, online test experience (ACER sittings). The essay prompts and essay writing practice is valid for both paper-based and online test experiences.

Additional information about the online testing format can be found in the Complete Guide to STAT.

Currency of practice material

Practice materials are not updated annually. If you have purchased practice materials in the past, please email stat@acer.org to determine if the practice material has changed since your last purchase.

Automatic scoring for online STAT Written English Test

To enable automatic scoring, several hundred responses to the prompts were marked using a criterion-referenced analytical marking guide. Responses were hand marked (double marked and adjudicated where necessary) using the STAT marking guide. The scores were Rasch analysed and a measurement scale was calibrated. Finally, the scores were loaded to the automatic marking system to create a computer model that replicates manual scoring and can ‘mimic’ the way markers assign scores.

In the event that the system is unable to score your responses, please contact the STAT Office at stat@acer.org. Your work will be reviewed by an ACER marker and you will be contacted within 10 days.

Interpreting practice test results

The practice material is intended to provide guidance on the types of questions you will have to answer when sitting the STAT test(s). It does not necessarily reflect the full range of questions or their difficulty.

Please be aware that there are many factors that may influence your performance during the actual test. Your practice test score is not a guaranteed indication of how you will perform on the actual test. It is not possible to calculate an indicative scaled score from a practice test.

Additional practice material

The Complete Guide to STAT and the STAT Practice Tests (detailed in the table above) provide the only source of practice questions available for STAT.
Past test papers are not released.
